Windows Commercial

Windows

Last night during The Daily Show’s 1am replay, we saw the new Microsoft commercial and were basically at a loss for words.  I hate apple commercials, they are like politcal attack ads.  Is that all they have?  trying to make the oposition look stupid by making fun of them and people who like it?  Yeah, thats not gonna convince me.

I don’t really know the point of this commercial, Hack A Day thinks it has something to do with humanizing Microsoft and Bill Gates.  No matter what its for, Jake and I rewinded and watched the whole thing again because we were just so confused as to what it even was.

watch it, its at least better than the stupid mac commercials.

snacks

After I get home from work / the gym, I usually like a little snack to hold me over until dinner.  With the constant stream of fresh grape, cherry, and roma tomatoes coming from the garden right out my back door, I have been making a tasty snack from some combination of:

  • Rye Triscuits that are just amazing however you eat them
  • grape tomatoes
  • cherry tomatoes
  • basil from the garden
  • tomatoes halved with pepper cracked onto them
  • mozzarella cheese, or a tiny bit of some other cheese
  • cottage cheese, see below

For cottage cheese, Pot Style is best, then the Digestive Health stuff is decent, but it HAS TO BE Friendship brand, you have not had good cottage cheese until you have had Friendship Pot Style or Digestive Health cottage cheese.  Kevin also likes the cottage cheese with pineapple from Friendship.

Anyway, combine some or all of the list of snack items below, and enjoy

Shotgun Weddin!

Bristol Palin pregnant — right now - First Read - msnbc.com
“Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi’s privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates.”

The 17 year old daughter of McCain’s VP canidate is preggers, and looks like her and her boyfriend are gonna be gettin a good ole fashion Alaskan Shotcun Weddin!  While I think its horrible that the media is reporting this, I think it is a great example of Republicans and the shortcommings of their conservative views.  Super conservatism doesn’t work, it just doesn’t.

Oh, and a woman? From Alaska? Who has no real experience except for being a mayor of a town in Alaska of 9,000 and less than 2 years as Governor of that very same, “not really part of the US” state.  Does he think women are dumb enough to vote for him just because he picked a woman and Obama didn’t?  That women will do anything to get a woman vice president?  I hope they aren’t that crazy.

Toothpaste For Dinner

Toothpaste For Dinner - “The most addictive comic on the web”

The biggest problem with Toothpaste for Dinner is that there are over 2,000 “episodes” of the comic.

I discovered it yesterday or the day before, but I am currently reading may 2008 and i currently do not even see the end in site.  Even the early stuff is pretty funny, check it out.

The Omnivore’s Hundred

The Omnivore’s Hundred

Here’s a chance for a little interactivity for all the bloggers out there. Below is a list of 100 things that I think every good omnivore should have tried at least once in their life. The list includes fine food, strange food, everyday food and even some pretty bad food - but a good omnivore should really try it all. Don’t worry if you haven’t, mind you; neither have I, though I’ll be sure to work on it. Don’t worry if you don’t recognise everything in the hundred, either; Wikipedia has the answers.

Here’s what I want you to do:

1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.
4) Optional extra: Post a comment here at www.verygoodtaste.co.uk linking to your results.

I have had 47 of the 100 items.

Of course, Exxon is on the first list, and still the number 2 company in the Fortune 500.  As far as I can tell, the rest of big oil is against LGBT discrimination for their employees, but Exxon Mobile, not so much.

Check out who else doesn’t protect the gays and think at least once if its worth giving them your business.

Shoe Lacing

Ian’s Shoelace Site - Shoe Lacing Methods
Criss Cross Lacing
This is probably the most common method of lacing normal shoes and boots. The laces simply criss-cross as they work their way up the shoe.

Friday’s run in the woods turned into a run in the fields, which turned into a climb through the woods to get back to where we needed to be.  Poison ivy was basically everywhere.  Fortunately I didn’t get any and Harry only got a tiny bump on his arm.  I decided it would be best to wash everything, shoes and all, just in case.  Harry was borrowing my trail running shoes at the time so I washed both pairs.  I just finished relacing my track shoes today because I have been wearing my trail shoes.  I laced them in Criss Cross style, with opposing “which direction is on top” for each shoe.

I missed the tongue loop on the first shoe so I had to go back and put the laces through it after I finished the second shoe.  Do other people use the tongue loop?  I use it in my running shoes but generally I don’t think I lace through it in my normal street shoes (granted, most leather shoes like I wear don’t have one anyway.)

Ian’s Shoelace Site is apparently the place to go for information on shoe laces.  34 ways to lace shoes, plus 17 ways to lace shoes with lugs.

How do you lace your shoes?
criss cross?straight lacing?spider lacing?

GLBT Movies

Outing Riley 2004

Bobby is a gay man in the closet in 2003, afraid to come out to his three older brothers, even though he’s at least 30 and is being pressed by his sister, his boyfriend, and his lesbian beard to tell the lads.

not really sure what to say about this one, I enjoyed it but it was a bit different. It got a 6.0/10 on IMDB, I give it a 7.5-8. Worth watching though, just because well, its can be hard coming out to people, even as an adult.

Sordid Lives (2000)
As three generations of a family in a small Texas town gather for a funeral, we learn the hilarious, sad, trashy truth of the “Sordid Lives.”

Once again, it was different.  I enjoyed the whole thing, not quite sure what Kevin thought.  6.7 on IMDB, I dont quite remember what I would give it, it was a bit ago.  I did like it though, I say it was worth watching.

Headlines!

FOXNews.com - New York Prostitute With One Leg Dies After Being Knocked From Wheelchair - International News | News of the World | Middle East News | Europe News

New York police said Friday a prostitute with only one leg was murdered in Brooklyn after a client hit her on the head and she fell out of her wheelchair, hitting her skull against a wall, the New York Post reported.

In addition to being “International News”,”Middle East News”, and “European News”, Fox is also “Stupid News” that somehow falls under “World”.  Maybe they don’t want to admit that it happened in the U.S.?  Now if anyone complains about only having one leg, just tell them they could always be a prostitite.

WordPress 2.6.1

WordPress › Blog » WordPress 2.6.1
Check out the full list of over 60 fixes to see if 2.6.1 has something to offer you. A full diff and list of changed files is also available. Download 2.6.1 and enjoy.

I know its against “best practices” but I have file level and database backups already anyway, so I wrote a script to upgrade my Wordpress install with minimal effort on my part.

./wordpress.sh gets the job done

cd /htdocs/www/
wget http://wordpress.org/latest.tar.gz
tar -zxvf latest.tar.gz
cp -Rfv wordpress/* blog/
rm -rf wordpress
rm -rf latest.tar.gz

There is probably a better way, some sort of argument for the cp command that would extract it over the blog directory, but this works well, its still super fast, and I dont have to worry about forgetting which arguments to use for cp.  I used to always end up with a wordpress directory inside of my blog directory instead of merging the two.

As a note:

I back up my mysql database with this in my /etc/cron.monthly for example:

mysqldump --add-drop-database --add-drop-table -A -p####-u ####| gzip > /backups/monthly/sql.gz

This is a weekly backup of my blog directory:

tar -zcf /backups/monthly/blog.tgz /htdocs/www/blog/

The Curiosity of Chance

The Curiosity of Chance (2006)

We actually watched this one before we watched Kinky Boots.  I really liked this movie and I am fairly certain it ranks highly for Kevin as well.

High school coming-of-age tale. It is the 1980’s — and new wave angst and gender-bending fashion are all the rage. The new kid at school, Chance Marquis is a somewhat awkward teenager who is the target of the school bully. To deal with this dilemma, Chance turns to the opposite ends of the high school spectrum for help. On one end is the flamboyant drag queen and at the other end, the varsity jock. Includes conventions of the high school genre — the idiot faculty, the good-hearted but misguided parents, the fairy tale reversal of popularity

This one got a 6.3/10 on IMDB, but in terms of GLBT movies it is still a high rating.  It definitely deserves better than that so I created an IMDB account so I could vote my opinion.  Watch it, its a good movie.  Plus Brett Chukerman is cute and apparently does mainly GLBT movies.

Woot Shirt : One Shirt, No Shoes, No Service (SM)
I have been buying shirts from shirt.woot.com lately.  The shirt of the day is 10$ with free shipping, which is a great price for quality shirts with awesome designs.  Plus they are so unique and well, fun, that I get comments on them wherever I go.  I wore Now Let Me Get This Straight to Park Ave Fest and the guy selling cinnamon almonds asked to take my picture because he loved the shirt.  He was also singing the song the whole time, which was hilarious.
Now Let Me get this straight

The other shirts are 15$ with free shipping, which I think is still a pretty decent deal compared to what you might pay at Pac Sun or even Kohls for some nice looking shirts.
